1-day workshop on SOCIAL ROLE VALORIZATION

This one-day event will describe Social Role Valorization (SRV) and some of its main elements. As an empirical theory, SRV is an important and effective framework for all sorts of service provisions that contains many positive assumptions, principles, and practices. In particular, this workshop is designed to give participants an appreciation of the importance of valued social roles for people who are (at risk of being) devalued in and by society, which is the primary goal of Social Role Valorization, as its name indicates.

The basic content of this one-day session provides a brief orientation to:
some of the major negative consequences of the societal devaluation affecting large numbers of people, including the facts that they become rejected, cast into extremely negative "deviancy" roles, and imaged very negatively.

the meaning and importance of social roles in the lives of such people.

The workshop format employs a variety of training media, including lecture presentations, using overheads and slides, as well as small group discussions, and the viewing of a video or film (time permitting). It will be presented by Joe Osburn, director of The Safeguards Initiative, and a long-time associate of Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger, the author of SRV; and also by Mike Morton, director of Community Ventures in Living.
