2026 Wolf Wolfensberger Summer Institute on Moral Issues
Announcing a 2-day Workshop on
Threats to the Lives of Devalued People, and
an Invitation to Take a Coherent Stance in Opposition to It
The late Professor Wolf Wolfensberger (1934-2011) founded and directed the Training Institute for Human Service Planning, Leadership, and Change Agentry at Syracuse University. He devoted his career to improving the lives of people who are devalued in society, especially those with mental impairments, and taught about the most serious and important topics in serving others, including deep moral issues. This Summer Institute is intended to keep alive his teaching on these issues, including by this 2-day workshop, originally developed by Dr. Wolfensberger, and now taught by several of his long-time associates who have studied and collaborated for many years under his direction. In our society, there is growing support for many forms of 'deathmaking' of devalued people, such as those who are impaired, poor, old, or seen as 'costly,' and such deathmaking is already being practiced on a large scale. Deathmaking refers to a wide range of practice, from outright intentional killing to very indirect measures, that abbreviate or end human life.
This two day workshop presents:
-
The reasons behind the deathmaking of devalued people, along with the personal and societal dynamics that fuel it.
-
The major forms that deathmaking takes in Western cultures today, including the many disguises and concealments that make it less obvious and less repugnant.
-
Ways in which those concerned for the well-being of devalued people can protect them from deathmaking.
