The Power of Social Roles April 2026

Exploring the Power of Social Roles

An introduction based on Social Role Valorization

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in participating in this learning opportunity. We look forward to spending time with you as we explore the importance of the roles that we hold. During our time together we will be looking at the plight of people who are devalued. We will be examining how our roles and our place in society affect the quality of a person’s life.

You will participate in a variety of exercises and discussions that will not only provide an interactive learning environment but will help you to truly engage and identify with the material. You will be encouraged to look at how you can provide services differently to support people to have full, meaningful lives. Throughout the course of our four meetings, we will introduce specific concepts of Social Role Valorization (SRV) as they relate to the work that you do.

Our hope is that this experience adds to your toolbox, leaves you with a fresh perspective, and inspires you to continue your education in Social Role Valorization.

Some things to expect and ground rules for participation.

  • We will meet 2 days a week over a period of 2 weeks. Please only commit if you can attend all 4 sessions.

  • We are exploring these concepts together and expect to learn just as much from you as you will from us. Please come prepared to join in both large and small group discussions.

  • To enhance the learning experience there will be independent and group work done during our time together with additional ‘homework’ between our sessions to deepen and personalize concept exploration.

  • Because each session builds on the material from the previous, it is imperative this 'homework' be thoughtfully completed prior to the subsequent session.

  • An open mind is a must! We will hold space for each one of us to be open, honest, and vulnerable as we talk about the difficult realities of devaluation and stereotyping.

  • You can expect us to create an atmosphere where we can all be challenged, engaged, and feel free to express any questions or concerns that arise during our time together.

  • To facilitate practical application, you will be exploring some concepts with a specific person in mind that you are supporting on an ongoing basis.

o   Please come prepared with this person in mind.

o   Be ensured that all information will be kept confidential.

  • You will leave with some foundational tools, a fresh outlook, and a renewed desire for positive changes in the lives of those we support.

Again, we are so glad you are here and very much look forward to experiencing this journey with you!
